WonderdogSoftware.Com - The latest updated Video Game Walkthrough; Game Guide ALIEN SYNDROME WALKTHROUGH Video Game Strategy Guide (Nintendo Wii) Also On: PSP
Release Date:05/29/2007 ESRB Rating: Rating Pending Genre: RPG Publisher: Sega Developer: Sega
Its been 20 years since the first Alien Syndrome hit arcades, and since then, gamers have come to expect a lot more from their action shooters. To rekindle the franchise, Sega has decided to give the game a bit more depth this time around. In addition to 3D graphics and Wiispecific controls, Alien Syndrome now contains an RPGlike experience system for upgrading your character, adding a whole new element to this classic shooter.
The playable character, Aileen, can improve the odds of her survival against waves of progressively tougher alien enemies by making use of the new experience system. Adding roleplaying flair to the simple moving and shooting, the game has Aileen collecting resource points from defeated enemies and using them to build up her strength, speed, accuracy, and health. If after finishing all 40 sprawling stages you still want to improve your stats, you can replay the entire game (at a higher difficulty level that you just unlocked, if you want), with your experience held over, and level all the way up to 99.
The controls use the Wii Remote for aiming, allowing you to target any enemy on screen by pointing at it. Turning the Nunchuck rotates the overhead camera, and all the firing and weapon switching is done with the trigger and face buttons on the Remote. Its not a great leap forward for physical interaction with games, but it is simple and effective. Finishing moves and crateopening minigames using the Wiis motion controls are promised to be in the games final release, which should help add some physicality to the controls.
There will be around 50 enemy types in the full game, all of which are either of the fire, electricity, infection, or radiation class. Each class of enemy has its own strengths and weaknesses (electrical monsters are strong against electric laser attacks, etc.). Weapons can be upgraded to be more effective against certain enemy classes, and at their highest setting, can devastate most of the enemies onscreen. There is also a melee weapon for upclose combat in case you run out of ammunition, which happens often if you rush through the game in a panicked frenzy.
Joining you on the alien hunt is a robot companion called Scarab that follows you through the levels and occasionally fires at enemies. This robot, which also trailed you in the arcade version, has been upgraded to serve as the players traveling merchant, selling health packs and ammo. If the robot isnt enough to keep you company, up to four players can control Aileen and a team of armored space troopers in coop multiplayer, where the enemies will be scaled according to the experience of the most advanced member of the group. At this early stage of development it is apparent that lots of attention has been put into the leveling up and fighting mechanics, but graphically the game is lacking by current generation standards. Hopefully the visuals will be improved as the summer release date nears.
As for whether well get to play the original Alien Syndrome either on Virtual Console or as a bonus unlockable on the disc Sega isnt saying anything just yet. Certainly, itd be nice if Sega decides to include the original game as a bonus incentive for Alien Syndrome fans nostalgic for the arcade glory days.
