When I thought I had enough of terror, blood and twisted images, my schedule had me checking the fifth installment in the Alone in the Dark saga, the series that created the survival horror genre. Oh man, I can tell you, I'll need many hours of therapy after X06.
As you may already know, this new Alone in the Dark will feature an episodic season-style structure inspired on the structure of popular TV action dramas. At X06, we had the chance to take a look at the first mission of the second episode of the game. This also marked the first time that the game was running on the Xbox 360 hardware, so we had the chance to see how the game looks in comparison to the PC version, which offers some visuals that cannot be distinguished from pre-rendered imagery.
How's that for a close shave?
The protagonist of the next-generation Alone in the Dark is still Edward Carnby but we don't know yet how Carnby, who had its first paranormal adventure with the first Alone in the Dark in 1926, is in modern day New York. But Atari has promised there will be an explanation for this.
The demo kicked off with Carnby clinging from a burning skyscraper. This unusual setting sets the new Alone in the Dark apart from its predecessors, as it takes you to wide open spaces and focuses on action more than adventure.
The intro couldn't be more dramatic. There's people crying for help, others offering a hand and at one time a guy wanted to approach Carnby but before he got close, he was smacked by falling rubble. The camera moved to draw attention to the distance from the floor, and I can tell you that on a big screen you'll feel the vertigo. This sequence gave me chills of the terrible images of 9/11 and, at other times, it reminded me of that sequence from the first Spider-Man movie when the Green Goblin attacks the balcony where the OsCorp executives and Mary Jane are.
As Carnby moved to the ledge, the wall broke apart and he started to fall down. In those few seconds, I thought: how can he escape from this imminent free falling? The ledge hit the ledge from the story below and Carnby jumped to a safe section.
Once again, and like in past previews, my words cannot describe this cinematic experience. There were many cool effects achieved through the use of a smart camera placement nearby showing you little things like rats escaping from the fire.
After the "Supernatural Detective" was really close to falling, he now finds himself trapped in a small spot of this burning building, and the only way to move on is to grab an electrical cable. Carnby grabs it but a giant billboard blocks him from swinging to a safe spot.
