Like just about everyone else in the gaming world, I'm sick of first-person shooters set on the battlefields of WWII. Yeah yeah, I know that "The Big One" represented the last time the whole nation rallied around a war and was the cultural centerpiece for what Tom Brokaw termed "The Greatest Generation." It's even spawned a number of excellent video games, from the Call of Duty titles to the (early) Medal of Honor games. However, to say that the WWII shooter genre has gotten stale is more than a bit of an understatement. Thankfully, there's one series that has stayed fresh since its inception: Gearbox Software's Brothers in Arms. We recently had a chance to check out Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway at a Ubisoft event in San Francisco.
If you played the previous games in the series, you'll be happy to hear that Sgt. Matt Baker, the hero of Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 is back as the hero, although it looks like he's beginning to feel the burden that can only come from being a leader of men. There are a number of moments that allude to characters and moments from the earlier games, none more striking than when Baker finds a pair of wire-rimmed glasses that remind him of his fallen comrade Leggett. We learned that you'll also bump into good old Sgt. Joe "Red" Hartsock at some point, as he's commanding a squad of his own. While a familiarity with the previous games certainly isn't a necessity when it comes to enjoying Hell's Highway, it will probably help improve the experience a little bit.
The game story takes place over the course of Operation Market Garden, the largest Airborne invasion the world had (and still has) ever seen. For those who haven't been reading their Stephen Ambrose, Operation Market Garden was an Allied offensive that largely took place in the Netherland, where American and British forces attempted to take a series of bridges along Highway 69, or "Hell's Highway." The early parts of the operation were a success, but it was ultimately considered a failure by some since the Allied forces were not able to take the village of Arnhem, which lay on the banks of the Rhine, the only thing stopping the Allies from driving right into Germany.
The demo we saw took place in the Dutch town of Son, and the environment looked unbelievable. Actually, scratch that, it looked incredibly believeable, as the development team actually recreated the town using photos and blueprints from 1944. While some of the core gameplay has remained largely the same (something that should make fans very happy), there have been several major changes that we'll get into in a bit. You'll still have two squads (Fire and Assault) at your command, and it looks like the command system is the same as before. Just point at an area or enemy, give the order to move or fire, and your men will carry it out. In a nice touch, the overhead view is still intact, but it's been reworked to look like one of the actual maps that the Army provided its men during combat.
One of the biggest changes made to the gameplay was the ability to take cover. In the previous games, all you could do was squat or lay down behind a wall to get away from enemy gunfire. Now, there's a button-based, third-person cover system that's reminiscent of the ones seen in Rainbow Six Vegas and GRAW. You can lean up against walls and other types of cover, leaning out or over to fire at foes or give orders. This allows the player to use different tactics depending on the situation. If you want to flank your enemies without being seen, just move from one piece of cover to the next, then give the attack order. Or, if you prefer, just take them on from the outset. However, there's one thing you should definitely know: just because you're behind cover doesn't mean that you're safe.
