 | While Crash of the Titans doesnt have any stopmotion monsters or mechanical owls (that we know of), it certainly has its own set of Titans to pit against the series hero, Crash. Its all thanks to Neo and Nina Cortex who are once again up to no good, causing creatures to mutate with their mysterious evil schemes. And this time, it seems that upstart Nina is going to show Dr. Cortex a thing or two about world domination. That is, unless Crash has anything to say about it. Using the PS2 version as the baseline model, Crash of the Titans will include exclusive features like achievements and motion controls on Xbox 360 and Wii, respectively. And while the PSP game will be the same as the PS2s, the DS iteration will be different but theres no information yet as to just how different itll be. The main underlying feature between them all will be Crashs newest ability. After punching and kicking the spit out of little mutated creature until it is sufficiently dazed, Crash can "jack" the enemy by jumping onto its back and essentially taming it for his own uses. While he stays on the tamed monsters back, players control the monsters movements and have access to its special abilities. Jacked enemies not only boost a players attack arsenal, but also come in handy for getting past obstacles that previously blocked the way.
But players cant just go up and take control of the meanest, toughest mutant on the block and bulldoze through the game. If that were the case, players could just tame bosses right off the bat, and that wouldnt be any fun now would it? In order to jack a boss (which is how you defeat it), players need to jack monsters lower in the hierarchy first; unsurprisingly, the larger the monster, the higher in the hierarchy it is. And little Crash (little when compared to a Titan or even Captain class monster anyway) doesnt have the power to subdue the larger ones himself. Instead, players have to work their way to the top, starting off with the littler guys and using them to get to progressively larger enemies.
In addition, Crash of the Titans combines the platforming of old Crash Bandicoot games with the new battling system. Some obstacles can only be cleared with the help of a jacked creature while some only without. But Crash has a pretty robust arsenal of platforming skills and tools at his disposal even without the help of a mutant. Besides spinning like a top or surfing down pipes and ramps, Crash can also use ropes and climb walls this time at a decently fast pace. Unique to the Wii version, many of the platforming abilities and attacks use motion controls. Taking a page out of Super Mario Galaxys playbook, the Wii version of the game has players shaking the Remote so Crash spins around with his arms outstretched.
And while the Xbox 360 game will have, besides upgraded graphics, an achievement system in place, it, the Wii and PS2 versions will have twoplayer cooperative play (offline on all systems). The second player can jump into the singleplayer game at any point, taking on the role of a differentlycolored Crash. Players can even jack one another for some interesting moments. Taking cooperation to the next level, players can clear jumping obstacles by "leap frogging" or taking turns controlling the next jump the game pings back and forth between the two controllers as each jump is completed. Due out later this year, Crash of the Titans seems to be worth a try, especially if youre a fan of the series. And who knows, maybe the game will settle the debate about whether Nina is Dr. Cortexs daughter or niece once and for all. Or not.
