Digital Extremes evolves the first-person action genre by bringing Unreal Tournament-style gameplay into a massively multiplayer persistent universe. Dark Sector is the next step in the first-person action gaming experience by blending the intense action elements of FPSes with the scope and character evolution of a persistent online universe.
In Dark Sector, players take on the role of Hayden Tenno, a government cleaner sent to the fictional Eastern European city of Lasria to eliminate a rogue agent named Mezner. It seems that Mezner has gotten his hands on a mysterious biological agent, called Technocyte, which can cause a variety of mutations and abilities in those infected. For the most part, this means turning them into rampaging killing machines. While trying to stop Mezner's machinations, Hayden is captured and infected with the Technocyte virus. Escaping from his captors, Hayden retains some measure of control over the virus coursing through his system, and ends up gaining a few new abilities of his own to help bring down Mezner once and for all.
On the surface, the game looks like and plays a lot like other third person shooters in which cover plays a major factor, games like kill.switch and more recently Gears of War. The biggest thing setting Dark Sector apart from others of the genre is the inclusion of the Krull-inspired glaive that Hayden makes liberal use of throughout the game. This bladed weapon can slice and dice foes up close in melee combat or from a distance, acting like a razor-sharp boomerang. Not long after picking up the glaive, the player learns a few new tricks for the device, including using it to pick up weapons and items from a distance, charging up for more powerful attacks, and even adding elemental properties to glaive attacks. The coolest feature, though, has to be the Aftertouch. By holding the right bumper after tossing the glaive, the player can slow time and direct the course of the glaive substantially. This is essential for hitting far away switches and cutting through foes as they try to duck behind cover. Without a do ubt, the glaive is the single best thing the game has going for it.
As for the rest of the gameplay, once you take away the innovative use of the glaive in combat, you're basically left with a run of the mill shooter. While a lot of comparisons have been made to Gears of War, this is one case where the comparisons are actually warranted. Just like Epic's hit shooter, the bulk of Dark Sector's gameplay involves the player sprinting from cover to cover, popping out just long enough to fire off a few shots before making a mad dash to more cover. The general combat is nothing that hasn't already been done time and again, many times with a more fulfilling experience. Still, once you toss the glaive into the mix, it does a substantial job of satisfying the rest of the combat's shortcomings.
