As Spider-Man 3 and Spider-Man: Friend or Foe proved, that didn't happen. Rather than tweak and expand a formula that was fun but flawed, Activision let the webhead slip into worse and worse titles. Now, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is upon us, and while it's no where near the slap in the face that Spider-Man: Friend or Foe was, it's got nothing on Spider-Man 2 either. There have been a number of Spider-Man games in recent years, and they have often been as frustrating as they have been fun. In this latest outing, however, developers Treyarch and Shaba Games have gotten it right. Freed from the confines of a movie license, Web of Shadows is a game that, while not free of blemishes, is a superpowered blast from start to finish. Web of Shadows again takes place in New York City, with Spider-Man deeply troubled by the continuing spread of the "symbiote" substance/being (that makes up his black Spidey suit, an alt version that comes with built-in attitude and different capabilities), which threatens to have many of the Big Apple's residents turning into gruesome creatures slithering through the dirty streets. It is pretty cool how the city becomes more filled with debris and the buildings seemingly covered with black, tarry ooze as the game goes on.
