Per Team Xbox: At the same time that publisher LucasArts and developer Day 1 Studios issued a press release to announce their plans to release an new intellectual property called Fracture, the pair were also hosting a first-look event to show off the third-person shooter at LucasArts' San Francisco-based headquarters. The gathering enabled us to get a solid understanding of why this title means so much to the companies.
Though there wasn't much information given on the eventual storyline that'll drive the title, the premise focuses on the inhabitants of a flooded Earth in the year 2161. At that point, the submerged U.S. landmass is mostly two smaller clumps of land—one to the east (which is part of the Atlantic Alliance) and one to the west (which is part of the Republic of Pacifica). Due to their differences—where the Pacificans feature a lot of genetically enhanced creatures and the Atlantians supported by an army of cybernetically improved soldiers—the game centers on the subsequent civil war that's broken out.
You play as Atlantian soldier Mason Briggs, a demolitions specialist who joins the battle with a bunch of special explosives on his belt. Special? Yes, because not only do they blow up, they cause the "terrain deformation" that's key to Fracture's action. For example, when he throws a Tectonic Grenade, the ground rapidly raises at the point of the explosion, while a Subsonic Grenade drops the land downward.
LucasArts indicated that the terrain deformation works in a number of different ways: for offense as a "WMD"; as a defensive tool, such as when the raised ground serves as a block between you and whoever is firing at you; as a lifting device, which helps in solving some puzzles; and as a navigation vehicle, such as when you throw a Spike Grenade, which causes a rapidly growing pillar to rise out of the ground.
Briggs also has access to a number of weapons, which work as offensive weapons in a traditional sense (by, duh, firing bullets), though also serving as yet another way to change the terrain. Denny Thorley, Day 1's president, explained (with the help of a presenter demoing actual gameplay) how a Vortex Grenade—which creates a tight whirlpool that sucks in whatever is nearby—can be blended with a rocket launcher for a deadly combination. Firing the rocket into the Vortex's funnel soon results in a contained explosion that rocks anything within the swirl. The effect is dynamite…almost literally.
