Playable for the first time at Sony's Leipzig Games Convention booth, we took an early version of Wipeout HD for a spin earlier today. In case you're unaware as to what Wipeout HD is, it's a downloadable PSN title that consists of ports of tracks from the PSP Wipeouts. And it's all high-res in 1080p, so it looks really smooth and sharp. The first thing that came to mind while playing is just how nice it is to play a Wipeout game on console again -- never mind that it's on PS3 and looks all nice. Really, it's the controller that makes a big difference. While Wipeout Pure and Pulse (due out this fall) are great versions of Wipeout on the go, the series is just so much better suited for the Dual Shock/Sixaxis controller and its analog sticks.
The visuals are, of course, the other big draw. But there's a caveat -- you have to look at them from the perspective of the game being a souped up port. While the tracks and hovercrafts look nice (in large part because of their relative simplicity), there are elements that don't quite look up to par -- explosions, for example, look quite pixilated. It's somewhat ironic -- the game's super high resolution actually helps draw attention to these blemishes. We did also notice a bit of screen tearing when the action got thick. Whether or not these sorts of details will be improved between now and the game's release remains to be seen, but again, as long as you take Wipeout HD for what it is, you most certainly won't be disappointed. Wipeout HD hits this fall, and from what we've seen so far at Leipzig, this'll be a great addition to PSN. In the very least, it'll be the perfect thing to hold us over until the next proper console Wipeout installment next year.
