From IGN:
The Wii has seen a few different flying games since its launch, but none of them have managed to be a defining game for the genre. Destineer recently stopped by to show us their new flying combat game, WWII Aces, the newest air combat game for the Wii developed by Arcade Moon. It's not out for a few more months, but we got to see how it's shaping up.

WWII Aces is an aerial combat game set, obviously, during the Second World War. Players take control of one of four different types of planes: fighter, bomber, fighter-bomber, and experimental. The game features the three major players in the war – the Royal Air Force, Soviet Air Force, and Luftwaffe – each with their own 24 mission campaign.

Each plane type has a distinct look and feel to it, and certain missions are tailored to the different plane types. Spitfire, Ju-87 Stuka, Mosquito, and He-111 are just some of the aircraft players can take flight with. The fighters are more nimble planes that can fire their guns longer without overheating. Bombers are bulkier, but have a far greater capacity for bombs, making them ideal for attacking ground troops.

The different missions actually correlate with real battles fought during the war. Dunkirk and Battle of the Bulge are just some of the battles featured in the game. Though the battles are made to be realistic, the focus is not so much on a retelling of the war. The real focus seems to be on the variety of planes, which are all real planes used by the individual armies.

Aces features three different control schemes and we got to see and experience two of them. The first one uses only the Wii remote, held sideways. Players tilt the remote around to fly, and flick it in various directions to do things like barrel rolls and loops.

Kaboom. The other control scheme we saw used the Wii remote and nunchuck, spreading the controls across both. Here the plane is controlled by tilting the nunchuck, and the analog stick controls the rudder to add some more fine tuned controls. Maneuvers are handled with the d-pad on the remote.

The first control scheme seemed more intuitive for flying, but has the downside of having to cram all the controls onto just the remote. Nunchuck play allowed us to interact with the weapon system better, but the flying was less exciting. Both control schemes have their advantages and disadvantages and players will want to fiddle with the different options to figure out which ones they prefer.

Overall the controls are seeming fairly solid. We're not sure if they're quite the most intuitive and easiest to pick up like the developers are going for, but we'll have to wait to make the call. For now the camera seems good, and we didn't have the problem of losing sight of our objectives that sometimes comes with pulling off tricks in flying games.

In addition, Aces has an easy to use bombing mechanic that allows the player to switch the camera down and watch their bombs take out targets. So when we accidentally blew up a church and a school while trying to take out some Nazis, we saw the destruction in all it's damning glory.

WWII Aces has multiple different terrains, like deserts, snow, countryside, and ocean. The first thing we noticed is that these levels are huge. They expand out in all directions for a good distance. A lot of them do seem a little bland though, especially the ocean, but the game is still in development.

In addition to the single player missions, WWII Aces features both co-op and competitive play. We got a chance to try out the Time Attack mode for multiplayer. The goal is to shoot down as many enemy planes as possible. Players can actually set how they want enemy planes to enter the playing field, so they can make it as easy or, in our case, a hectic as they want. Setting the enemies to "Scramble!" creates a constant barrage of enemy planes appearing everywhere. It's pretty fun, and could potentially be a really solid multiplayer game. Fans of Rogue Squadron games man have their Nintendo Wii precursor here.

WWII Aces will be flying into stores early 2008
