Lost Odyssey is his studio Mistwalker's latest attempt to make the Xbox 360 an RPG system as classic as predecessors from Nintendo or Sony. So how did the critics like Lost Odyssey? Hit the jump for our Frankenreview to find outan edition so good you may never need to read another review again. GamesRadar
It's also very, very pretty, with gorgeous cutscenes and in-game models, as well as rich environments and diverse level designs...The opening of the game is literally two hours of cutscenes mixed with a few instances of you making Kaim walk across a pretty environment. IGN Combat in Lost Odyssey is about as traditional as you will find in a modern-day game. It is completely turn-based with a menu system that seems taken straight from 1998. Everything you would expect is included. You can attack, use an item, cast magic, or activate a skill. Weapons in Lost Odyssey are pretty boring as none hold any special properties whatsoever -- they are merely an Attack rating and nothing else. And the magic is the same thing you've experienced for the past 20 years. Worth Playing Lost Odyssey's combat...is excruciatingly, unbelievably, agonizingly slow. A random battle can take somewhere around five to 10 seconds just to get through the opening animation of the battle. This is compounded Lost Odyssey's rather lengthy loading times, which occur quite often and last for what feels like an eternity. Between the loading times, the pointless camera panning and the incredibly time-consuming animations, combat slows to a crawl. X-Play It's just a shame that the developer, Mistwalker, couldn't get beyond their own limitations. Much like SquareSoft before them, it's clear that they'd rather be making a movie. At heart, Lost Odyssey and the most recent Final Fantasy are interactive movies with character stat-building. Many things in the game are done purely for visual style and to passively push the plot. Kotaku Because you see, Lost Odyssey isn't really a game. OK, it is, and it's a pretty decent one, but bear with me. The Gooch said as much himself, when he offered that the game was about emotion, not innovation. It's about the story, the world, the experience. And I'm man enough to admit that, as the tears flowed down the character's Unreal Engine 3-animated faces upon [a] moment of death, that emotion had me hooked. It sounds like if you're a fan of classic Sakaguchi, you'll like Lost Odyssey.
frederic249 at 12:09 PM on 02/14/08 looks decent
drbutchevil at 12:11 PM on 02/14/08 Nearly every review for the game that was released had complaints about the loading times, which, appear to be different in the review copy compared to the retail version. I have retail version and its at most 10 seconds for battle load times, and is loaded well, and no other loading is over 10 seconds, mostly under 5. Slorg at 12:11 PM on 02/14/08 Looks ok. I can't stand the random encounters. Why do they do that? I'm trying to start a blog a bout gaming design. Particularly about bad decisions. I can;t believe in 2008 we're still doing random encounters and thinking they add anything to a game. ortegar at 12:11 PM on 02/14/08 So I guess Nintendo is the only company that can get away with doing the same game over and over again. ssjmichael at 12:12 PM on 02/14/08 Seems like your average JRPG. demonwolf at 12:12 PM on 02/14/08 the character design turns me off, and the battles I have seen turn me off. Guess it is safe to try at my buddies place. BD at 12:12 PM on 02/14/08 Final Fantasy for the Xbox. What's not to like? It even comes on like four discs to emulate the experience. Raziel3333 at 12:13 PM on 02/14/08 so its just a jrpg that you don't play full of FMVs? ugh. bwwardiii at 12:13 PM on 02/14/08 Franken review = da bob-omb!!! Seita at 12:13 PM on 02/14/08 Considering how emotional I can get (doesn't mean it happens often.) I'll be buying the game. I hope I don't get tired of it halfway though, like Eternal Sonata. Mr. Garcia at 12:14 PM on 02/14/08 ok. pretty game, boring loading times, passι fighting mechanics. Pretty game. :P FoxHoundADAM at 12:14 PM on 02/14/08 Sadly I don't have teh time to watch 28 hour movies. I was interested but I'll have to pass on LO. josh924 at 12:15 PM on 02/14/08 The negatives the reviewers give for Lost Odyssey seem pretty much the same as the negatives they gave for Blue Dragon, which pretty much boils down to "it feels old-school". That, to me, is actually a positive, so I'll definitely be buying it soon. unicronband at 12:15 PM on 02/14/08 I'll be buying this when they fix the packaging issue. hamandcheeseUK at 12:15 PM on 02/14/08 @Slorg: Some people (me) like random battles, this game looks awesome, only thing putting me off is the apparently horrible loading times Jordan Lund at 12:15 PM on 02/14/08 @SLORG RPGs are all about random encounters. You can't grind levels without them. greeble at 12:15 PM on 02/14/08 This game sounds horrible. I guess its strictly for High School kids with no social life and Japnophiles. I hate having to wait forever for battle animations. (damn you Knights of the Round table in FFVII and your non skippable summoning animations) I have tons cards in Eye of Judgement that I've never seen attack because I always have battle animations off. ssjmichael at 12:15 PM on 02/14/08 Wait, Two hours of cutscenes throughout the opening of the game?? That's way too much. I want to play the game, not watch it.... the-hypnotoad at 12:15 PM on 02/14/08 The thing is, 360 owners don't really have a lot of choice for JRPG-style games. So if you like that sort of thing, everyone seems to be saying this is the best of the bunch and your decision is easy. The other side of the coin seems to be that reviewers pretty much conclude that it doesn't really break any new ground other than looking pretty. So if they've never been your bag before it won't win you over. caleb at 12:16 PM on 02/14/08 Well, to each their own. I can't say that I'm surprised some of the scores, lets face it...it's still a wheel (didn't re-invent anything) but I thought this game hit all the right spots for me. Story was great, game play was what I expected it to be and it was familiar. I think that the way games should be viewed now, should be on how they stand alone, not how they stack up too something else...otherwise everything is bland and repetitive (ie: God of War, DMC, Halo...ect.) ssjmichael at 12:16 PM on 02/14/08 @Jordan Lund: Not anymore they're not zanzibarlegend at 12:17 PM on 02/14/08 looks ambitious, but imho, FF13 will prob destroy this game. Saint Anima: Kotaku's Poetic Massacre at 12:18 PM on 02/14/08 Basically a game for JRPG fans. I doubt others will buy it. But this game should be supported, regardless. Robert Summa at 12:19 PM on 02/14/08 @ortegar: Oh, you are so very right. :) Cagny at 12:19 PM on 02/14/08 Just got back from the store with this game. I can't wait until I get to formulate my own opinions on it. frederic249 at 12:20 PM on 02/14/08 @zanzibarlegend: yeah well FF13 wont come out for a while unfortunately... sander_dutch at 12:20 PM on 02/14/08 It looks interesting enough, I'm sure up for some more RPGs. Just too bad it needs to load so much, that really gets frustrating after a few hours. Games need to flow more, instead of screeching to a sudden halt every time. Perhaps MS can permit more developers to use the harddrive as a buffer for loading, as an option at least for those who have it (like 99,9% of xboxers) drywaller79 at 12:20 PM on 02/14/08 I don't know about the game, but I like the commercials for it.
Khabi at 12:20 PM on 02/14/08 @Slorg: I really prefer the random encounters. My experience is that when they're on the screen, I go out of my way to avoid them. But when you're low on health and don't have much in the way of healing, getting nailed with a random encounter takes on a new meaning. It brings some skill into the game, and makes you take a bit more caution on what you plan to do. I actually had it happen a few times while playing LO last night. Random encounters for the win. :) djricekcn at 12:20 PM on 02/14/08 @the-hypnotoad: All three consoles don't have a lot choices for JRPG-style games, period. Even the PS2 isn't seeing one right now. dip at 12:21 PM on 02/14/08 @greeble: " I guess its strictly for High School kids with no social life and Japnophiles." Not sure where you get that from. Dakobah at 12:21 PM on 02/14/08 @Seita: *gasp* blasphemy! how dare you speak of Eternal Sonata like that! no just kidding, i can be the same way sometimes. Im at the last chapter of it. I need to finish it so i can move on to this game.
Way at 12:21 PM on 02/14/08 "an edition so good you may never need to read another review again." Sorry. No. Rickster at 12:21 PM on 02/14/08 well, its not trying to be a FF-killer as ps3fanboys said. who the hell said that in the first place? this game was made for oldschool on mind jayntampa at 12:21 PM on 02/14/08 I picked it up yesterday, I can't wait to play -- ok, yes I can. I'm waiting for my new TV ... it's refresh is at 120hz, so I can't wait to see what my games look like :D baked ham at 12:21 PM on 02/14/08 @the-hypnotoad: Unfortunately, the stuff you find on the 360 is just about all the JRPG choice you have on the 3 new consoles.
em0d at 12:21 PM on 02/14/08 I played it for about 5 hours yesterday and I love it. I have no idea what people are talking about with the loading times. They are perfectly normal for an rpg. I have yet to sit there tapping my foot on a load screen. Sure there are a lot of cutscenes, but the story draws you in and the fighting does pick up. The skill management system in the game hasn't really been elaborated on, and it's a great addition to what everyone is calling a typical, bland fighting system. I don't think you have to be a classic jrpg fan to get into this game. You take it for what it is, and unless you cannot play a game without constant action you will love it. Slint at 12:21 PM on 02/14/08 I'm nto sure what people were looking for or expecting from this game. The load times? Really not bad at all... I've only noticed them because reviews have complained about them. And it's a traditional JRPG! You're going to then complain about the turn based fighting and cinematics? That's what defines the genre. lol (Loving the game. Glad there's finally a good JRPG for this generation.) Rickster at 12:22 PM on 02/14/08 @Rickster: *with oldschool on mind There's nothing wrong with avoiding encounters. If I think back to FFVII I must have put like 90 hours into it. If there weren;t ways to lessen the encounters later in the game I never would have finished it. 30 or 40 hours ok, but after a time combat get so tedious its just painful. Especially if that combat is old-shool turn based and you have to watch everyone animate the same old "Tundara" animation every single time. Yuck! JohnnytheFuture at 12:28 PM on 02/14/08 Saw this at Tokyo Game Show and it looked interesting enough, though, I'm no fan of turn-based, nor random-encounter combat. I'm sure this game is good either way. I feel like the sites/magazines reviewing this game have the wrong people reviewing it. If i had a 360 id probably get this, but im not in anyway bothered that i dont :) Maybe I'll try this when it hits the bargain bin... and gets a better box. JRPGs have their very innate strength in honoring old school and providing an awesome 60-80 hour story. Keep on excessive innovation and yet another genre is lost, kinda like what happened with graphical adventures. *lights a candle to all those awesome Sierra & LucasArts games* DARTH_TIGRIS at 12:34 PM on 02/14/08 Funny and true. This and Blue Dragon were announced as traditional JRPG's and now people rip them for that. There are tons of traditional FPS' out there that are well done in their respective genre (CoD4, for one) that are praised, but this gets ripped for that aspect. Since when did turn-based end up being the absolute worst thing in the world (outside of DS, PS2 and PSP games, that is)? creid at 12:37 PM on 02/14/08 Wow that bar graph is hard to read. Buying this game! Why cant people just enjoy games and stfu. @greeble: you say that and you play a card battle game XD apologies to all other card game lovers. Maybe they could've fixed it with a hard-drive install... u speak of truth MiyamotosChin at 12:49 PM on 02/14/08 Rubix42 at 12:49 PM on 02/14/08 What if this is the way all reviews are going to be done from now on? Well, Uncharted was good and all, but I fail to see how it stacks up to a game like Halo. Sure both explore environments, have vehicles, and contain lots of shooting, but they are immensely different games. Same thing here, this is a JRPG. So many reviewers are knocking it for being what it is, and not even reviewing the game. I personally find it to be a nice addition to the JRPG genre. It does enough stuff different (rings, skill linking) and has enough cool plot hooks that are voluntary (1,000 years of dreams rock) that it is a good new experience. And random encounters is a fine design decision. Since when is that a bad thing? Massiah at 12:50 PM on 02/14/08 This game is far better then any review site is giving it credit for (save Kotaku). The loading, while frequent, is not 20-40 seconds, more like 5-10. The short stories of Kaim's past are VERY well written, the main story is pretty formulaic though. The battle system is a tried and true system with a few tweaks. I think that pretty much all the review sites are too hung up on OMG INNOVATIONS rather then the quality of the game. I like traditional JRPGs, and I hope they dont go away, because I hated FFSPMMORPG (12). I'd give it an A just for effort. However, when I am carrying around 99 health potions and 99 mana potions, the random encounter thing really adds no danger. Back in the Dragon Warrior days, you could really get nailed straying to far from the city. But in the recent games, like Blue Dragon, the money system is so off-whack, there's no danger to it anymore. "Hmm, I'll sell this crystal sword for 5000, and buy myself 99 potions of healing at 50 a pop." More power to those of you who enjoy this stuff, but somewhere between Chrono Trigger and FFVII I lost interest... Get over it already! Yes, they screwed us on the packaging, but this in no way takes away from the game itself. Would you rather pay $60 for a game that will last 8-12 hours or have a 4-disc game with 40+ hours of gameplay that comes in a plastic bag? Sorry, I forgot that we already covered this; you would only buy it if you liked the color of the bag. elranchero69 at 01:05 PM on 02/14/08 elranchero69 at 01:06 PM on 02/14/08 RandalGraves at 01:07 PM on 02/14/08 I guess the reason the scores for this game are all over the place is because some people knew what to expect and others don't. It's a JRPG, and those standards, many of the complaints seem baseless. Is everyone going to like it? No, but not everyone loves FPS. So, where are the reviews saying Master Cheif just isn't innovative anymore? A rational review would acknowledge that it is a JRPG, and judge it on those standards. It isn't a world-changing game experience, but it certainly isn't bottom of the barrel crap either. But that's my judgement, and I'm only 2 1/2 hours into LO; and so far I am loving the story telling, which is why I bought the game. the way, that Bravia you're looking at is on sale at Circuit City right now -- plus, if you order it for pick-up online, they have a 10% off coupon! It's a great TV, too. ShinobiFist(PSN-XBL) at 01:09 PM on 02/14/08 Megiddo at 01:10 PM on 02/14/08 Is it really that bad for a game to come out that's not "different;" for them to use an already proven "good" design? The loading times aren't anywhere near as bad as Mass Effect, and are about the same as Devil May Cry. The main reason people are whining about this is simple. It doesn't have the words Final Fantasy in the title. Seriously, if it did, it would have sold bazillions of copies right away. FrigidAir44 at 01:16 PM on 02/14/08 Random encounters: bleh. The staple of a JRPG. Hey Japan? Go back a few years and look at Chrono Trigger. No random encounters! It was a great game too! TheHun at 01:20 PM on 02/14/08 @FrigidAir44: I'm sure that the developers are quite familiar with Chrono Trigger.. Second, reviewers have to be shocked this is alot of times the reason FPS and very violent games get good scores, the violence is shocking, while games that aren't so bloody get ignored. It is sad that in today's gaming climate there is no room for making a good game with a good story. Put out a shooter no story no plot just random encounters with guns and you are applauded, make a game with a story and a battle system that is tried and true even though not hectic and you are jeered. I am not complaining with every generation things change this just maybe the way gaming is going now. It gets 11/10 from me, just the fact that it brought me back to the inital Squaresoft days. Its been amost 10 years since I last remember when I couldn't wait for the day to be over so I can play an RPG. Voice Acting for the English soundtrack is pretty good though I think the main characters actor sounds like he's trying too hard to sound unemotional (as the character is supposed to be). The only complaint I have is with Random Battles never have liked them and though I disliked the quasi real time of FFXII (that decision neutered the usefulness of Summons IMO)I did enjoy the fact that I could see my enemies. The Dream Sequences yes they are text but they are very well written, and add a good depth of character to Kaim. It would have been nice if there was a voice over to them but since they seem to have about 5 different language tracks already that would have added another 3 discs at least :P
sascha23 at 01:40 PM on 02/14/08 MugiMugi at 01:41 PM on 02/14/08 There is even a category of games called 'Visual Novels' this some times include no interaction what so ever then click a button, This is still games. Also take the Xbox 'Movie' Adventure Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, I have yet to read bad reviews about this, but somehow when it's a JRPG because it's not an 'western' RPG it gotta get clanked down, it sucks, it need to be new, cannot never use an old and working game system. No it need to be clanked down no mater what. I love deep story based games, whatever there is much action or not in them, hell I love to play Visual Novels, but there is VERY few of this in English. For me, Story is everything, gameplay is second, it may not be the same for all but why type crap about a game when it's clear it's not for you, go play something else and stop complain.
