What if mankind had to leave Earth, and somebody forgot to turn the last robot off? After hundreds of lonely years of doing what he was built for, WALL-E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) discovers a new purpose in life (besides collecting knick-knacks) when he meets a sleek search robot named EVE. EVE comes to realize that WALL-E has inadvertently stumbled upon the key to the planet's future, and races back to space to report her findings to the humans (who have been eagerly awaiting word that it is safe to return home). Meanwhile, WALL-E chases EVE across the galaxy and sets into motion one of the most exciting and imaginative comedy adventures ever brought to the big screen. Joining WALL-E on his fantastic journey across a universe of never-before-imagined visions of the future, is a hilarious cast of characters including a pet cockroach, and a heroic team of malfunctioning misfit robots. Players of the game take control of WALL-E and EVE through a fast-paced adventure based on the Disney/Pixar film. The game allows fans to relive some of the movie's most thrilling moments as they explore 10 worlds filled with non-stop action and adventure, along with head-to-head multiplayer challenges. Players will recognize the storyline, characters and key locations from the WALL-E film as they carry out intense missions, dodge dangerous enemies and navigate their way through a futuristic world. In addition, the game contains new storylines and environments that movie-goers will not see in theaters. [THQ]

Of course, what would a summer blockbuster be without the obligatory movie tie-in? Disney and Pixar's upcoming animated flick WALL-E will be no exception when it comes out next month, with an Xbox 360 platformer scheduled to release in time with the movie. We've been spending a little time with the titular trash compactor's console debut, and so far it looks like THQ may have a gem in the junkyard.
In case you've missed the deluge of advertising and trailers making the rounds, the story of WALL-E is set in a distant future where Earth has been abandoned after rampant commercialism has turned the planet into one big junkyard. While the world's population left behind all of its refuse when it took off to greener pastures, it also left behind WALL-E, the last functioning robot tasked with cleaning the planet. WALL-E happily goes about his daily tasks until he comes across EVE, a probe sent back to see how the planet is coming along. What follows is a cute little robotic love story perfectly suited for video-game goodness.
The first thing you'll notice about WALL-E is the game's visuals. This game looks phenomenal. The opening stages on Earth look amazing, almost as if you're actually playing the movie. The remnants of an overindulgent humanity litter the landscape, complete with ads for the Buy 'n Large superstores. Players have to navigate through all the junk to move around from Point A to Point B. Moving around the environment is a simple matter, and the controls are as smooth as silk.
Occasionally, WALL-E comes across piles of litter that he can use to create various types of junk cubes, which he can throw at obstacles and event triggers. WALL-E can carry up to three cubes at a time, balanced precariously on his head until needed. Players can switch from the standard view to a more close-up or even first-person view when WALL-E needs to fire with a little extra accuracy. Later in the game, WALL-E also gets himself a bit of an upgrade, earning a blaster a little later in the game. That's not the only extra at WALL-E's disposal, though. Not far into the game, the robot teams up with his love interest, who helps him in his adventures.
EVE has been granted the gift of flight, which players will have to use in some stages exclusive to the character. These stages play a lot like some basic race games, with EVE flying down a predetermined path, avoiding obstacles and oncoming traffic, to progress through the levels. EVE also helps Wall-E to navigate some areas by lifting him off the ground for short periods of time. Wall-E isn't exactly Michael Jordan when it comes to his hang time, but with EVE as his co-pilot, Wall-E can hover a little further to get to those hard-to-reach places.
For fans of the movie, developers are tossing in a lot of extra goodies, with things such as concept art and videos scattered about. There are even special outfits for both Wall-E and EVE. While you'd expect something like this from most movie tie-ins, what makes these stand out is that a lot of the bonuses comes in the form of props from previous Pixar hits. It's almost as much fun collecting these tokens as it is actually looking over the bonus content they unlock.
While the single-player campaign seems to be solid enough to keep people entertained, the developers have also added four multiplayer modes, so that gamers can share in the fun with their friends. The four modes are Stop the Clocks, EVE Aerial Arena, Robot Tag and Keep the Cube. Stop the Clocks is a two-player co-op mode in which players team up to find and disarm timers scattered around each level. EVE Aerial Arena and Robot Tag are the game's equivalent of Deathmatch modes, while Keep the Cube, as the name indicates, is a sort of Hot Potato game in which players try to maintain control of a cube longer than their competition.
So far, it looks like WALL-E is shaping up to be a shiny little treasure buried in the junkyard of movie-based video games. The game's got some good gameplay elements and a rock solid presentation. While there are still a few bits of rust and grime here and there that could stand a little extra polish before the game's final release, it's still a safe bet to say that WALL-E has the potential to capture some of the magic from the movie when it hits the Xbox 360 next month
