This hottest videogame adaptation of a popular movie just goes to show why it's so difficult to make one work. I watched the film and felt dismayed by the fast moving closeups making it difficult to see what was really going on. From a basic design angle, there's no reason Quantum of Solace the videogame shouldn't be fantastic. It uses the Call of Duty 4 engine, it was done in conjunction with the movie makers so it features accurate settings and voice-over work from the real actors, it has plenty of multiplayer options, etc., etc. And yet, the overall experience of playing Quantum of Solace is fairly dull. It lacks the excitement of the movies, or of other shooters. It begs the question, why?
There are a few factors. Number one, the game tries to charm too many people. The shooting mechanics so simple any gamer can understand, why a challenge is necessary here. While being genuinely fun enough to satisfy the more hard core amongst us. But they lack real punch, with no blood or gore or sense of realism. How does one kill a couple hundred evil henchmen and not see a spot of blood, not counting the cartoony stuff that drips down over the trademark inside-the-barrel-of-a-gun view.
Surely the developers are under constraints from the movie studio as far as the gore is concerned, and that's understandable. But the over-reaching attempts to make the game accessible to as many gamers as possible sinks it in other ways. There isn't really much gameplay behind Bond's non-shooting action either. Hacking computers involves nothing more than holding a button down for a certain amount of time. There's a little minigame involving unlocking doors that's about as simple enough that a well-trained dog could do, and the minigame around takedowns – a tried and true scripted button press sequence – is criminally simple. In other words, there's not much challenge to this game for anyone who's ever played a shooter before.
The other big problem is when it's coming out. Again, the game developers are stuck with a release date that's tied to the movie, but this is a bad time of year to be releasing a decent, if middling shooter. Who's going to put Gears of War 2 or Fallout 3 to the side for this game? The timing is not the developers fault, but it's still really unfortunate.
Off-screen: 007 shows off some suave moves. Quantum of Solace: The Game puts players in the role of a more lethal Bond. The game blends first-person action with a third-person cover combat system to give players a better feel of being a secret agent.
