If you're like me – or in other words, as old as me – then you probably have fond memories pf playing the original Golden Axe in the arcades like I do. At first blush a fairly unassuming little side-scroller with a fantasy themed setting, Golden Axe was instantly addictive, letting players play through again and again with one of three different characters, smashing monsters and baddies right and left, launching magic attacks and riding on the occasional mythical beast. The 2D gameplay was deceptively deep for its day, resulting in a verified video game classic. Whether you remember it from the real arcades or the Xbox Live Arcade where it debuted last year, you probably remember it fondly. So are you ready to see Golden Axe in an entirely new way?

Golden Axe: Beast Rider is an entirely new imagining of the game, keeping many of the same ideas and themes from the original franchise but updating the look and gameplay for the latest generation of consoles, namely the Xbox 360. Ok fine, PS3 too, but who cares. Beast Rider features not just updated 3D graphics, but a completely new style of gameplay that somehow has its roots in the original sprite-based side scroller.

The changes are not all plusses. There is some addition by subtraction going on here too. Instead of choosing between the Dwarf, the Barbarian or the Amazon, you only get one choice. It's a good one though, unless you have a dwarf or barbarian fetish. You'll play as Tyris Flare, the sexy Amazon, and once again you will battle your way across the mythical land of Yuria. But instead of just having attack, jump and magic at your fingertips, you'll be blessed with a host of awesome melee weapons and moves to unleash those weapons on your foes. And then of course, there's magic attacks, which are as big and impressive looking at the melee attacks are bloody and dismembermy. Don't worry, the Dwarf and the Barbarian will definitely make appearances as npc's.

This ain't your daddy's Golden Axe!

But the name of the game is Golden Axe: Beast Rider, and the mounting of huge fantastical creatures, each with its own attacks and unique abilities. As you encounter these beasts in the world you can get on and ride them and in fact you will need to to progress past certain parts. In the original 2D side scroller there were beasts you could ride, but then again so could your enemies. During a demonstration of the game given at Sega's San Francisco office by developers Secret Level, a few of these beasts were shown off. They included:

The Abrax – The smallest beast that you'll encounter, the quick moving bird-like dinosaur (he looks a bit like a velociraptor crossed with a parrot) is basically a combination of 2 beasts from the original arcade game featuring fire breath and the 180 degree tail swipe attack. Being smaller, the Abrax is able to get through tighter spots, like an area that featured spikes shooting up from the ground in tight patterns.

The Lynth – The fastest beast the Lynth is very cheetah-like. His main trick is the ability to go into stealth mode turning invisible (indicated by a shimmery "Predator-like" look) that allows you to sneak up and attack unsuspecting enemies. The flip side is, enemies can of course grab a Lynth and go all ninja on you.

The Mirigore – Also known as the "Beast Killer", the Mirigore is a huge, hulking gorilla-like monster with huge claws that can tear enemies to shreds. To get the most out of his abilities, the player needs to enrage him sending the Mirigore into a crazed attack mode for 30 second bursts. This guy is great for when you're outnumbered by enemies, since his area attacks are lethal.

The Raptor – We didn't actually get to see this creature, but he was described to us in great detail. Basically a T-Rex inspired giant lizard, you mount the dangerous raptor by jumping on his back, sticking a sword into his spinal column. At that point, you have control of the beast, but he's essentially dying beneath you. The only way to keep him alive is to feed him. Good thing he has a taste for blood, because there are plenty of enemies in the world who are just waiting to be food.

The action, be it on foot or on the back of a ravenous beast is wild and bloody. Taking hints from games like God of War and Heavenly Sword, Golden Axe: Battle Rider revels in glorious bloody violence. But there is definitely depth to the game. There are some heavy rpg elements in the game, like the ability to upgrade your weapons and magical abilities. You can also buy items like new weapons and outfits, including a skimpy bikini (ooh-la-la) and of course, the Golden Axe itself.

What seems really cool are all the nods to the original game. The developers promise plenty of "inside jokes" that longtime fans of the series should greatly enjoy. One of those jokes is the return of the gnomes. In the original game, little gnomes carrying a sack would run into the scene on occasion, and if you kicked them they would drop potions or health. The same mechanic is in place in Beast Rider, but there are four different types of gnome to kick this time, each giving you a different thing like mana or health. The red gnome however is an evil gnome, which I find to be sort of redundant. All gnomes are evil in my book. Hopefully the storyline will pull everything together in a really compelling way. For now, the action is looking rather promising, and the ability to concentrate on just the killin' in certain modes like the battle arena – where you'll have to complete sixty stages of increasingly harder combinations of enemies in gladiatorial combat – should just extend the experience further.

That's what we know since Golden Axe: Beast Rider released October 14th, 2008.

CRITICS CORNER:

583DJuegos
Golden Axe: Beast Rider confuses the tribute to retro with the flat and boring gameplay. The new game of SEGA is mediocre in every aspect, and comes as a failure in its attempt to recover a legendary name and turn it into a worthy product of Next-Gen platforms.

40GamePro
Fans hoping for a worthwhile update to one of gaming's most revered hack-and-slash franchises will be sorely disappointed by this poorly designed and utterly mediocre title.
