It's hard to get any kind of pre-season NFL information this year without hearing about strong-arm Brett Favre and his recent choice to unshed those tears and come out of retirement. It has inspired us to join the Favre media circus as well of course– he is on the cover of Madden NFL 09 you know, still in green and yellow. It looks like Electronic Arts' "Thanks Brent" cover athlete move for Madden NFL 09 has things a bit frantic on the eve of one of the biggest title releases (sales-wise anyways) each and every year.
The Favre saga is a testament to how great the gridiron is (men of the cloth actually shorten their sermons to get worshipers home by kick-off– it's a documented fact). Here's a chap– thirty-eight years young– given the chance to make big bank sans hazardous duty pay. He eventually passes the dollar signs up for a chance to sling a few more, er, passes. Has he gone mad? Nah. It's just hard to put the endorphins on the shelf when the ride that produces the thrill is as remarkable as NFL football.
The Madden series and Favre have a lot in common, so it's no surprise the slinger was the cover athlete for Madden NFL 09. They've both been at it forever, they are both huge competitors and they both have surfaced from tumultuous situations, seemingly unscathed.
The times have changed around these two icons, but they usually adapt to the surroundings with chameleon-like grace. One difference between the two, however, is that while Favre will still have to compete to win (games and the hearts of staunch New York sports fans) with the Jets, EA has already won the minute Madden NFL 09 hits the shelves. This is due to licensing, you see, and the fact that few pigskin fanatics are going to pick up a game without NFL and NFL Players Association backing. Sanders, Elway and Rice are nice, but it's things like full updated NFL rosters, official team gear and trademarked names like 'Super Bowl' that make Madden NFL 09 the only real choice in football this year.
If EA has been doing football with success for two decades and doesn't have to worry about licensed competition in 2008, what exactly is its impetus to make Madden NFL 09 better than its predecessor? Of course there's that drive to sell more units than last year, but just like Favre, EA Sports and its Tiburon studio love the sport of football. So the goal becomes passing the football love encased within Madden NFL 09 on to more than just those that pre-order it every year and camp out to pick it up at 12:01. Tiburon decided to go after a broader audience with Madden NFL 09 by making the experience more accessible– especially for those that have the fear of God put into them by complex, next-gen sports game controller layouts.
Tiburon's solution to easier access to Madden is the Adaptive Difficulty Engine. It doesn't completely work as it ought to in the advanced settings, however. Contests are made harder withMadden series stand-by rubber-band A.I. and general, superhero-level defensive intuition which always seems to have a D-back in position for the pick or a lineman stuffing up the run lanes. Yes, the competition seems to be pulling a Patriot on your playbook all the time, but there are many merits of this new adaptive difficulty system that help to outweigh the above issues.
