WDS: So you've been there since the very beginning, right? You were on the original Road Track Presents: The Need For Speed?
Hanno Lemke: That's right. Well, honestly, it dates back a little bit before that. I was working at Distinctive Software, and the owner, Don Mattrick later the president of Electronic Arts Worldwide Studios until 2005 and I worked on the original Test Drive series that [was] published by Accolade. So that predates some of the Need for Speed products that we've done.
Our goal there, way back when and the overall franchise vision for Need for Speed was to create the most immersive, visceral, and relevant kind of car experiences you could imagine. Back then, it was the Apple II and the Commodore 64 and immersive and visceral back then was dealing with how you could get somebody to feel like they were behind the wheel of a car. Before that, it was all thirdperson, topdown views. I think we did a great job sort of nailing that experience with Test Drive, and that then became sort of a passion of ours: cars, both in real life as well as in the videogame space. And when we came to what, back then, were the nextgen systems it was the 3DO multiplayer, no less it was [one of the first CDbased systems] and 32bit, right? We thought, Wow, how do we recreate that passion and vision for driving games on this new system? And that's when we got into the whole Need for Speed thing.
WDS: Mark Little, producer of Need for Speed: ProStreet, talked a little about the phases of Need for Speed's history when he showed us the game for our preview. You've been there for all of them...so take us through it as you've observed. HL: Sure, absolutely. I mean, when I grew up, it was the white Lamborghini poster in your bedroom or the red Ferrari, and it was very much about [how] the exotics mattered back then. And so, like I said, immersion was really important getting into the driver's seat, that virtual fantasy, you know. No reallife consequences I can drive as fast as I want, the cops can chase me, but largely it was all about what it would feel like to drive these exotics.
I would say phase one or chapter one would be Need for Speed on 3DO, [followed by]Need for Speed on the console platforms, and then Need for Speed II. Exotic cars on the best kind of roads you can imagine. Little details like hearing the shift click mattered back then; watching the dials move mattered.

User Hype: Need for Speed: PS Prostreet? Author: BeatU , 06/07/2007 This game better go in a new direction because carbon sucked. It better be good or NFS is off my favorite franchises list. After I played Carbon, I said I'll give them one more chance. So, make it good. ...full hype > New direction? Huh? Author: InspectorFowler , 06/06/2007 I don't wish this game any ill will but I really don't see how it takes the series in a new direction, as everybody has been claiming... Heavily modified cars compete in a variety of events including drag racing, drifting, and circuit racing, etc... The new damage system sounds like an interesting ...full hype > WRONG trekkerguy! Author: Xcite79 , 06/06/2007 trekkerguy, your funny man. Since when has it been all about street racing. you must have just jumped on the series during the NFS:Underground days! ferrarimanf355 is completely right and the game looks to be shaping up well. Don't forget, gameplay is the most important part!!! ...full hype > trekkerguy Author: ferrarimanf355 , 06/06/2007 No, the NFS series is NOT about ricing cars. I'm assuming that you never played Porsche Unleashed, the true pinnacle of the series. As for ProStreet, it looks nice, that's for sure. I need to see a complete car list before I get excited, but so far, so good... ...full hype > Curse you EA! Author: trekkerguy , 06/06/2007 Looks completely retarded. The whole point of this series has been the underground illegal racing culture. And EA is completely removing anything that made this racing series stand out. Carbon was a load of crap that we wont mention. Need For Speed Most Wanted was the pinnacle of the series
