Spy Hunter Flick Being Rebuilt, Sans John Woo
Instead, we get Paul W.S. Anderson. Joy!
Despite the release last year of Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run, the game supposedly based on the movie based on the game, the Spy Hunter film adaptation is still nowhere near production. In the past few years, the project has been passed like a basketball between several writers (including Zak Penn, Derek Haas and Mark Swift), with original director John Woo bolting due to scheduling conflicts.

Variety, however, reported on Friday that Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat) has been tapped by Universal to take over the directorial vacancy, and he will work with a new writer to compose a script. The selection of Anderson isn't terribly surprising, considering his voracious appetite for films based on video game properties; Anderson also wrote and produced the Resident Evil sequels, and is listed as a producer on the upcoming DOA: Dead or Alive.
What is surprising is that Dwayne The Rock Johnson is no longer confirmed to appear in the film, despite starring in Nowhere to Run and being the face of the project for nearly three years. The report did not mention whether the role of Alex Decker would be recast, leaving open the possibility that Johnson will indeed reprise his ingame role (or that the character could be canned altogether).
