If Mizuguchi's Lumines series wasn't trippy enough, fans of the odd musical pacing of this casual games genius' fine work could go back a bit and check out Rez—Dreamcast's funky 3D shooter and perhaps a photosensitive-seizure sufferer's worst nightmare.
Although the Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 versions of Rez were impressive in a casual game/musically-driven game sense, the graphical capability of these systems really held things back, making most fans of the series wonder how good Mizuguchi's rail shooter could be on supercharged hardware. Well, that question has been answered with a resounding "excellent" with Rez HD, which just so happens to be a perfect fit for the Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade service.
Let it be known that Rez HD is the same game that Dreamcasters and PS2'ers were playing over seven years ago. Technically, Rez HD is a graphical update of the original game, so it's not unlike any of the reworked ROMs or old 16-bit stuff that frequently shows up on Xbox Live Arcade with enhanced graphics modes. The original Rez is here in all of its glory, but the "HD" in the title should already have tipped you off that 720p and above is the only way to play this mindbender.
Photosensitive gamers need not apply.
The concept behind Rez HD is quite simple, but, just as with Lumines, "simple" does not mean a free pass will be granted to this game's ending. You'll begin your journey in what looks like a mock-up for an unfinished, 3D third-person shooter or perhaps a secret area of Battlezone or Tempest that your quarter supply wouldn't let you reach. Yes, the look is straight vector (even though it's not V-based), with colorful explosions and skinned enemies thrown in for a bit of flair.
Your player character is vector-style, too, and looks like something out of the mind of M.C. Escher or maybe from Tron (interestingly enough, the PC form "evolves" as things move on). In any event, your PC actually floats above the landscape—at a reasonable pace—while enemies come from just about every direction. These enemies are not human in form, but rather reasonable facsimiles of sci-fi spacecraft, sparrow missiles and even the Death Star.
Technically, it's not possible move your player character around Rez HD's screen, but he/she/it will move as the squarish reticle is positioned within the game space. This slightly changes the perspective of the action, and enables those enemies that emerge from the left, right and even behind the sliced-up hero to be targeted.
Targeting an enemy in Rez HD is simple. Holding in the A button and passing the reticle over an enemy will target it, which is confirmed by the text "locked" displayed inside a box shaped indicator. The good news is that eight enemies can be locked onto at once. The bad news is that once Rez HD progresses, you'll wish you could lock onto eight-times-eighty enemies due to how hectic things become. This isn't a flaw of Rez HD, it's just the MO of any of Mizuguchi's games; it will become excruciatingly difficult as the levels go up.
