Rumor CleanUp: Mark Rein on Gears Coming to PS3
Forum tomfoolery leads to internet gossip outbreak. Some interesting internet happenings last week provided a perfect example of how rumors spiral out of control. If you've never heard of the Sony Protection Group, you're not missing much. In their own words, the group and website were founded as a movement against Wii60 and a movement towards the Playstation 3 that can serve as Sony's defense against a perceived push of lies and rumors harming their beloved company.
...it would seem that Developer/Publisher relations between Epic and Microsoft Game Studios is at an all time low and even spilling out into the public. In short, Epic has had to break every rule they've laid down for themselves and their reputation with the PC gaming community in the name of Microsoft profiteering... and they know it! But it was the next line that angered a few important people: Cliff Bleszinski of Epic has even been quoted as threatening Microsoft to port over GOW to the PS3 to try to leverage some developer rights over the content of the game and XBox Live, but they have already inked the contract and Microsoft is winning much to the chagrin of Epic. The poster went on to suggest Maybe we'll see a Gears of War Sigma, referring to lastgen Xbox exclusive and currentgen PS3 lustearner Ninja Gaiden Sigma. The thread continued for five pages, with some support and some naysaying. Site founder Narutoboy responded, I don't see this actually happening, but from what i'm reading, it sounds possible, while at least two different moderators admitting they didn't believe it likely. Unfortunately, no one argued against the unsubstantiated claim CliffyB had threatened to port Gears to the PS3. Here's where things get strange. Several sites, including News For Gamers and Video Gamers of America, picked up on the forum post and started reporting it as news. The story has since been removed from most sites, but for a brief moment, it turned musings of a forum fanboy into a real rumor.
Epic didn't stand for this for long, though, as evidenced by the response when the story popped up in a thread on the official Gears of War forums. Epic vice president Mark Rein had this to say:
This story is complete bull****. I emailed the site and asked them to take it down. We're very happy with our relationship with Microsoft. If it weren't for them Gears wouldn't be the huge hit it has become. To quote SPG's Narutoboy (and giving the Sony Protection Group a fair shake, despite their agenda), This story got waaaaaaaaaaaaay out of hand.
