At a glace, SWAT: Target Liberty on PSP may seem like the next Killzone: Liberation. The untrained eye might miss the fact that this is how the SWAT games of yore looked and, for the most part, played. Moving away from the FPS genre, Target Liberty is aiming to get back to the strategic side of things and into the hearts of tactical savvy gamers when the game is released later this year. On the story side of things, Scott Rosenbaum writer on a handful of The Shield episodes is crafting the narrative. And for research, the design team was put through squad training exercises and hired consultant Ken Thatcher, a veteran of expertise in all things SWAT. What do these things mean for the player? In theory, resources like that help demonstrate to the team what it "feels like" to be in SWAT. If all this can be conveyed to players through proper execution then the game will be well on its way at this early stage, however, some things seem to be lost in translation.
For starters, the camera manipulation at this point is quite limited. You cant rotate the view or zoom in and out. Instead, the camera will automatically rotate as your team walks through the level. This wouldnt be so bad if it didnt reduce the tactical planning to your team walking through the level, waiting for the bad guys to shoot at you and reveal their locations. The camera is being tweaked and hopefully some variance in how you approach the level will result, but well have to wait and see how it plays out.
The R1 button serves to bring up a navigation reticule, allowing you to control your squad placement commands on the fly. And since the primary goal of SWAT is to end standoffs in a relatively peaceful (read: not firing your weapon) manner, you will be able to yell at just about everyone to drop to the ground. Whats to keep us from running around continuously yelling at people? Not much, which sounds silly, but it is how these things transpire in real life...isnt it? There will be about 12 levels in the game, with some indoor and outdoor environments taking place in New York, totaling about eight hours of gameplay. And the multiplayer portion may extend the life of this game a bit. The most impressive part we saw of Target Liberty was the "Killhouse Generator." What this does and it only works with multiplayer games is create a random level for you to play through with a friend. Just pick if you want to play a small, medium or large map and the game will randomly generate a level, making each multiplayer game different every time you jump in to play.
Since its still a while until the game is released, we look forward to checking up on it later in the year once its closer to retail.
