Club is finally released by SEGA, and seeing as it was developed by Bizarre Creations, the same development house responsible for Project Gotham Racing, and Geometry Wars, they have set out to create another highly-addictive game and have done so, as The Club has turned out to be one of the most addictive, in-your-face shooters to hit any next-gen console! The Club, at its core, is an adrenaline-filled run-and-gun shooter which rewards you for basically killing as many people and kicking as much tail as humanly possible.
The visuals of The Club are absolutely top-notch as they have some amazing artistic elements to them. The characters are highly-detailed as you will see some great texture work on them as well as in the various locations. The colors and animations are also solid as characters will move at a rapid past with great fluid animations. Special visual effects also have great flair, solid particle work on explosions. The only small issue with the visuals of The Club on the PS3 is the fact that there is a bit of slowdown in certain spots, which is disappointing as this is not seen in the Xbox 360 version. The same can be said about the audio, as the special effects of the audio from all of the action will have you absolutely immersed in the action. For those with a nice sound system, the action will have your room rumbling with great bass-work. The guns sound extremely powerful, unique, and impact-full.
The game is a third-person shooter in a sense, but in a whole different sense, it is a beast of its own. This is because of the sheer speed of the game which will require extremely fast reactions to various attacks. The game is set up for non-stop action and that is what it delivers. The overall gameplay element of The Club is pretty basic for a third-person shooter though in terms of controls, as you will have the shoulder buttons handling the various tasks such as melee attacks and running, while everything else simply falls in place on the control. It controls extremely well and responds to your commands nicely and fluidly. There are also some minor additions which are rarely seen in a third-person shooter, such as a button for a 180-degree turn, which allows you to quickly snap the other way to pull off a quick kill or respond to incoming fire. Another very cool addition is the Killbar. Basically this measures how fast you kill enemies in the game. The faster you go from one kill to another, the higher the combo goes. When this happens though, your Killbar begins to drain faster and faster, making it more and more intense as you try to rack up that kill combo to unforeseen heights.
The Club has you playing one of eight characters as you go through an underground blood sport like you have never seen before. The whole idea is to basically kill as many people as you can, and survive for as long as you can. The single-player mode is set up in a very basic fashion. Basically what you do is you take your character, your weaponry, and you try to absolutely blast your way through each level. If you manage to rack up the kills and survive, you will be able to move onto the next level. There are 49 challenges in total split up over 8 locations, which each challenge making up a mini-level of sorts. There is a Tournament mode which has you going up against seven other people, but that is not all. The various challenges you will be going through vary from Sprint, to Time Attack, Siege, Run the Gauntlet, and Survivor. The modes each have you trying to do various things in different ways. Survivor is one of the more intense modes as you are thrown into a marked area, and basically have to fight to stay alive for a period of time. This can get extremely challenging and enthralling all at the same time.
If you want to set up your own scenario of events to try and plow through, you can do that as well in the GunPlay mode. This allows you to set up the events any way you please, in any of the various different locations and on various difficulty levels, allowing you to battle it out and have some freedom of customization as well. It would have been cool if you could have uploaded these for people to try out though. Speaking of online play, The Club has a plentiful online multiplayer set-up which will have you playing this way beyond the single-player game. The online aspect has team game modes as well as free-for-all modes allowing up to 8 players to battle it out in a single game. These games work extremely well as the modes of play are unique and immersive.
The free-for-all game modes online include Score Match, Kill Match, and Hunter/Hunted. Hunter/Hunted is definitely the most enjoyable out of these modes as you are basically playing a game of tag. If you make a kill, you become the hunted. For team modes online, there are Team Siege, Team Skullshots, Team Capture, Team Kill Match, and Team Fox Hunt. These are also unique aspects to these modes. Specifically, the Team Fox Hunt as you hunting down your opposing team's fox, while trying to protect yoru own. There is also the Skullshots mode, which has you trying to find your enemy's Skullshots and destroying them. All of the team modes are highly addictive. The Club is a fantastic next-gen third-person shooter. The game is extremely action-packed and runs at a pace that will have you absolutely addicted. The single-player and online multi-player modes are very enjoyable and really keep your heart rate pumping. If you want an in-your-face shooter that will blow you away, you mine as well join The Club. Once you jump in, it will be hard to leave!
