There are 12 new tracks, and the addition of magnetic strips has led to more extravagant track design, including loops and sheer drops. When it comes to the racing itself, Pulse is pretty much identical to Wipeout Pure and 2097 before it. The difficulty level is initially pitched perfectly, and after winning the first few medals, most players will find that it can take a couple of attempts to get on the podium for each event. Success can sometimes be a bit hit-and-miss; you might get lucky with weapons, and at other times the artificial-intelligence opponents will focus on taking each other out instead of you. But as you begin to learn the intricacies of each of the tracks, you soon find yourself adjusting your racing line to pick up the weapons, and even discovering some of the shortcuts. Whatever the level, Wipeout Pulse is an addictively punishing game that rewards those who really get into the zone while playing it, especially as the difficulty ramps up toward the end.
For the first handful of races, my love for the sound of scraping metal meant I didn't place in the top three spots, necessary to unlock more events. To be pathetically honest, I didn't manage to arrive in the top seven. Out of a field of eight. But then it clicked, in the way that only WipEout titles can. I stopped thinking. Without realising it, my brain had soaked up the precise location of every corner and speed pads. When I stopped trying to remember where to go, my subconscious guided my hands as if I wasn't even there. I hit speed pad after speed pad, precariously missing the sidelines and flying through the course at speeds approaching that of a bullet. And that's when the warm fuzzy WipEout feeling hit me for the first time since I originally fell in love with the series on PS1. Even better, this time around I wasn't a sketchy mess after a night of sweating in a warehouse, listening to (cr)happy hardcore cranked to brain-melting levels.
According to those splendid websites that go around counting all the review scores, WipEout Pure is the second best game on the PSP. Ever. That's not bad for the seventh game in a clubby racing series that's definitely had its uppers and downers. Lucky number eight, due out for Christmas, remembers to drink lots of water and has a jolly old time too.
At its core, it's still the same old WipEout: pilot your fragile ship around very fast courses over and over again until you know where all the boost pads are and you've worked out how to air-brake through the tight corners without scraping the sides. But thanks to a cleverly reworked single-player game, it's a lot easier to get on with.
