Previews: Romance of the Three Kingdoms...
Finally, a RTK game with current-gen visuals!
01/24/2007

Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Koei's strategy incarnation of Chinese history's greatest epic, has always been the console version of those slow plodding tabletop war games your dad played back in the day. Unfortunately, RTK titles haven't just played like relics -- they've looked like relics, too. But we're happy to report that with the upcoming Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI, PlayStation 2 will finally get a RTK game that looks like it was designed for PS2.
Actually, RTK XI is downright beautiful, sporting cel-shaded environments modeled on ancient Chinese ink-paintings. It feels a bit like Okami, though not quite as stylized. In our opinion, it's the first RTK that gives you the sense that you're really in ancient China instead just looking at a grid-based map.

The little geographical details -- blurry sprites in previous games -- are all much more vibrant, if a bit small. You've got your cities, fortified gates, mountains, streams, rivers, and farmland. As you scroll across the map, you can even see The Great Wall crisscrossing the Middle Kingdom's northern frontier. You get a real sense of scale...and a sense of how massive the task of uniting a war-torn China really is.
On the gameplay side, RTK XI eschews the role-playing elements of RTK X (where you traversed the warring states and interacted with the populace) in favor of the more traditional strategy of ruling from the sovereign's throne. It's nice to see this long-running series take chances now and then, but it's also good to get back to the in-depth, addicting management that has defined RTK. In fact, with a stronger localization and more accessible tutorials than ever before, RTK XI may be the best chance for newcomers to jump into this esoteric strategy franchise.
