Microsoft Secretly Patches 360 Security Exploit Full-blown homebrew delayed a little longer. Hackers have been making modest progress with Xbox 360. Unlike the original machine, whose hardware was so PC-based it wasn't long before people were using the machine as a cheap PC alternative, Microsoft encoded all sorts of security measures into their next-generation effort that's kept the hackers busy coming up with new solutions. And they were becoming successful, which clearly made Microsoft nervous. But, C|Net (via Engadget) reports the software giant worked with the hacker community to come up with a patch that would render the current hacking solutions meaningless. The update was issued late last month without much fanfare; on the actual Xbox website, it's listed as nothing more than an "operating system update." The fix will also appear as a mandatory update on all Xbox 360 games released after February 20, so anyone interested in picking up future releases will have a hard time holding onto their exploitable machine. The relationship between hackers and corporations is awfully similar to a game of chess, however, and now it's the hackers' move. Other WDS GUIDES: GRAND
