The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (NintendoDS) Release Date:11/01/2007 ESRB Rating: Rating Pending Genre: RPG Publisher: Nintendo Developer: Nintendo On the Game Developers Conference show floor today, sharing space with some of the upcoming Nintendo Wii titles, are two kiosks full of DSes set up with The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass'...battle mode. While there isn't any new single-player gameplay to be seen, the battle mode proves a sufficient teaser, allowing a glimpse of things to come while the game fleshes out as we near the projected end of year release date. The battle mode is two-player over local Wi-Fi, and involves the competitive collection of variously sized Triforce pieces. Each player's Link (red and blue) has their own designated strip of land (marked by color) which they must fill with as many of the Triforce pieces that are strewn across the map as possible. That sounds like a pretty straightforward battle mode, but here's the twist -- each player takes turns controlling their Link. On the map are also three black solider statues, which are controlled by whoever is not currently controlling their Link. When controlling the sword wielding statues (draw a line to designate the movement path), players can hunt down the opposing Link and cut him down. Once caught (or when the time runs out), the round ends, and the roles are reversed. Each player controls their Link three times and the person with most Triforce pieces at the end wins. Players control their Link via Navi, who is directed around the lower screen with the stylus. Tapping on a Triforce piece will tell Link to pick it up. Depending on the size of the piece, Link will slow down due to the weight of his shiny prize -- the larger the piece, the slower Link moves. A neat trick to use is to tap the ground a bit ahead of link while he is holding onto a Triforce piece, causing him to toss it. Link can then run up and pick the piece right back up again. This helps speed up the transport of large pieces, but also helps your defensive play. Whenever Link is holding a piece, he is visible to the enemy on the overhead map displayed on the DS top screen, which makes for some easy hunting. The clunky statues are slow, but if Link has a huge bit of gold above his head, he's going to have a tough time getting away. It's been quite a while since we last saw anything about Phantom Hourglass, and we're hoping that there's more to come in the months ahead -- not only different modes but single-player as well.
