Castle Crashers (Xbox 360) Release Date: ESRB Rating: Genre: Action Publisher: The Behemoth Developer: The Behemoth As part of the Independent Games Festival pavilion at the Game Developers Conference this week, The Behemoth is showing off a new demo version of upcoming Live Arcade hack-n-slash Castle Crashers (which kind of rhymes with "hack-n-slash"). While the base functions in this version are similar to what we've seen in the past, the new demo showcases a couple scenes in particular revealing how the game puts a spin on the traditional beat-em-up formula. First up in our hands-on time, we fought through what seemed to be a traditional level, chopping bad guys and practicing air combos. Then came the boss, a giant and stylish barbarian that filled probably a third of the screen at certain moments. But it was after we defeated this monstrosity that the game took a surprising turn. The four of us had saved the day, and then we instantly shifted from partners to competitors -- trying to kill each other to see who got to kiss the princess. Apparently this happens every time you save a princess in the game. The second level we tried took place in a forest with a river and other pleasantries, but after we spent a bit of time battling and wondering why there were four deer on the screen, a giant eye-heavy beast popped out of the wall on the left side and started chasing us, triggering us to jump on our conveniently placed deer and start riding quickly to escape. At this point, the biggest question remaining about Castle Crashers is its release date. Back at Comic-Con, the developers were estimating a first quarter 2007 release, but now they are staying away from even confirming a 2007 release. So it may be awhile, but from our latest taste, we're definitely still willing to wait.
