Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PS3) Also On: DS | PS2 | PS3 | PSP | 360 Release Date: ESRB Rating: Rating Pending Genre: Action Publisher: LucasArts Developer: LucasArts Yes, Star Wars will return once again to our living room. This time, it's showing up on our next-gen consoles, handhelds and last-gen consoles. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is poised to become the next big intellectual LucasArts property, along the lines of Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire so many years ago. The storyline takes place in the oft-touched era between Episodes III and IV, so expect to see some fan favorites such as Shak-Ti and worlds like Kashyyk and Felucia. You are put into the boots of Vader's secret apprentice, with access to your personal ship, the Rogue Shadow, and a few sidekicks to boot. The plot has the potential to lend a lot of credence to the fiction of Vader's character. Think about it: this could mean Vader started to seek revenge against the Emperor years before trying to seduce Luke to his cause -- and we all know how that turned out. We deduced this from the team's promise of a fantastic story with some morality elements, but we'll have to wait to see if the true potential of the fiction is realized. The physics are damn impressive, even in this early state. Although the levels appear linear, what you can do between points A and B is what has us intrigued. Do you want to force blast open a door? You can. Want to grab a storm trooper and use him to destroy the catwalk a dozen other troopers are standing on? You can. Theoretically, you can play through the entire game without taking your lightsaber out once -- just throw all the enemies around. This game is all about telekinesis, and you'll be able to play co-op through the entire thing online. For Jedi aficionados, there is also a series of saber moves you can pull off (like throwing your saber into the belly of your enemy) to aid in your galaxy conquering skills. Essentially, the team's goal is to allow the player to do everything they saw in the Force Power Pre-Vis concept video. But any company can take money and invest it into R&D to churn out a great physics engine. Valve's Half-Life 2 is a perfect example. But it's what you do with the engine that will make or break your game. LucasArts has the intellectual property and it has the technology -- it just needs a fantastic game. The Star Wars license is bordering on overkill, and Lucas hasn't delivered a solid action oriented game since Jedi Knight 2. Sure, Lego SW 2 sold well, and KOTOR told a fantastic story, but everything else has fallen flat -- the recent SW: Lethal Alliance is a perfect example. So, the pressure is on and we will be keeping a very close eye on this game over the course of the year and into next, because we are hoping for nothing short of excellence with so much at stake this time out.
