Mario and Sonic to Co-Star in Upcoming Sports Title
Fanboy worlds collide as longstanding archrivals enter the Beijing Olympic Games.
03/28/2007

Yes, you read that right. Mario and Sonic will soon be sharing the spotlight together as the leading men (hedgehogs?) in Sega's recently-announced Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. Your childhood fantasies asplode.
In a move that's sure to confound fanboys from both of the major 16-bit era tribes, the existence of the groundbreaking crossover was revealed yesterday in a press release currently viewable at Sega of America's website.

As you might expect from the game's title, Mario and Sonic will focus on real-world sporting events cribbed from the actual Olympic games (specifically the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, whose logo features prominently on the official website). The press release specifically mentions events like swimming, the 100m dash and table tennis being on the roster -- though you can bet on more events being revealed as the game's release date draws near. Playable characters will include all the fan favorites: Mario, Yoshi, Luigi, Tails, Knuckles, etc. and promises to make 'innovative use' of the unique control schemes for both Wii and DS (the website says expect a dual-platform release "Holiday 2007") so expect plenty of waggling and tapping as you're sprinting your way to the finish line.

"Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games," says Shigeru Miyamoto. "In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?"

Does this title showcase the growing atmosphere of co-operation and buddy-buddy going on between Nintendo and Sega? If Mario and Sonic can compete against one another in the Olympic Games, what other theoretical arenas might we see the famous pair squaring off against one another in? The mind reels.
